work remotely

“We come in many different shapes and sizes, and we need to support each other and our differences. Our beauty is in our differences.” – Carre Otis

There are a few reasons why you might want to consider taking a job where you can work remotely. Maybe you are a parent and you want to spend more time with your kids. Or maybe you are a true creative and you feel trapped by your 8-to-5 office job. Whatever your reason, you don’t have to stay in a job that doesn’t make you happy.

Can you work remotely?

Firstly, just consider the industry you’re in and if it would make any sense for your employer to give you more flexibility. For example, if your job actually requires you to be physically present at the office, you would have to find something else entirely. But if you can actually do your job remotely, consider discussing your options with your employer. If your job is mainly computer-based and online, you can probably work remotely.

Computer-based jobs

Software/web development

Many people think that software or web developers are very logical, structured people. While this is true to some extent, development is actually a creative job. Even though some of the things they develop don’t look pretty, they’re still creating something out of nothing. And many of these types of jobs have design elements to them, like app development and web design.

Both web design and graphic design are good options if you want to work from home. If you are very artistic, you might enjoy graphic design. Web design, on the other hand, is a perfect balance between art and programming, so if you are skilled in both, this might be the job for you. However, you don’t need a qualification in order to become a web designer – you can do a simple WordPress training course to teach you the basics of web design.

Copywriting and blogging have been around for a long time but has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years. People are starting to realise that language matters and not everyone has a way with words. The way something is written can make such a big difference that businesses have started outsourcing their writing and even employing writers instead of just asking the assistant to do it.

You can also find many of these types of freelancing jobs on websites like Freelancer, Upwork, and Fiverr.

Sales jobs

Call centre reps

Call centres aren’t necessarily cubicles lined with computers and telephones. The agent calling you might as well be sitting alone in their home office. This is quite a new initiative, so finding opportunities like this might be a little hard at first, but if you’re the type of person that can handle the tough clients and chasing targets you might enjoy this.

Sales reps

There are many businesses that offer sales consultants the opportunity to work from home and at their own pace. There is a wide array of products you can sell, from skincare and supplements to jewellery. You may or may not have targets to chase, but ultimately the amount of work you put in will be what you get out.

Alternatively, start your own business

If you are a very self-driven person, you can consider starting your own business. Whether you choose one of the suggestions above or something else entirely, like architecture or accounting, you get to be your own boss. Keep in mind, though, that this type of boss is the strictest of them all and you only get paid for what you put in. No work, no pay.
